History....
The Crime: Between 1872 and 1873, an unknown perpetrator used thousands of forged 1-shilling green stamps on telegrams at the London Stock Exchange, pocketing the cash collected for the fees
The Scale: The Post Office was defrauded of an estimated £50,000 at the time—worth roughly £5 million to £6 million today
The Detection: The scheme went completely unnoticed by postal authorities and was only uncovered 25 years later by a sharp-eyed young stamp collector
The 26 July 1872 date on the postmark holds incredible significance for this specific stamp. It places this piece squarely at the very heart of the historical crime.
The "Double" Postmark Trick: Counterfeiters operating inside the telegraph office on July 26 often applied a double cancellation. They purposefully heavily inked and overlapped the postmarks on that exact day to hide as much of the forged stamp's design and lack of watermark from anyone who might look too closely.
